At the age of five, Helena Zengel had her acting debut as a young child in the music video for the song “Streets” by the Berlin-based alternative rock band Abby. After that, she appeared in a lot of films made by students from prestigious institutions in Germany who were attending film school.

She made her acting debut in the 2016 drama “Looping,” in which she portrayed Lilly. The movie centers on three women who, in pursuit of protection and safety, wind themselves at a mental health facility.

She first gained attention for her role as Bernadette (Benni), a nine-year-old neurotic, combative, and impulsive child who lashes out if anybody but her mother touches her face, in the German drama film “System Crasher” from 2019. According to a social worker in the movie, Benni experienced a childhood trauma in which diapers were shoved on her face. This trauma is what led to Benni’s temperament. Helena won the Best Actress Prize at the Deutscher Filmpreis (2020), the German version of the Academy Awards, for her performance as Benni.
